Product Description

Smooth-Cast™ 45D is a fast-curing urethane casting resin and is designed to be pigmented in the mass with polyurethane resin pigments code 8450025. Smooth-Cast™ 45D has many advantages, including:

  • It has a short drying/curing time.
  • The cast pieces are durable.
  • It reproduces fine details accurately.
  • It has a low shrinkage rate (<0.25 mm / mm).
  • It has easy dosing (1:1 by volume, no scale needed).
  • It is easy to use.

Recommended Uses

Smooth-Cast™ 45D is used in a wide range of applications such as: reproduction of models and sculptures, industrial applications, etc. The finished pieces are semi-flexible and can be painted, drilled, sanded, and machined. The resin can also be pigmented in the mass before casting with polyurethane resin pigments code 8450025.

Instructions for Use

The resin SMOOTH-CAST™ 45D IS A PRODUCT INTENDED FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY, SO IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE.

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN

Safety – Use the resin in a suitably ventilated area (with extraction/ventilation). Wear safety glasses, long sleeves, gloves and a mask.

Store and use the resin at room temperature (23°C); lower or higher temperatures will drastically reduce the working time and curing time. Storing the resin at lower or higher temperatures will reduce its shelf life, whether the container is opened or unopened. These resins have a limited shelf life and should be used as soon as possible. Closing the lids immediately after removing the required amount will extend the life of the remaining material. The remaining material should be used as soon as possible.

Release Agent Application

Apply a release agent to the mold such as Universal Mold Release Spray code 9418006. Apply two light coats of release agent to the mold with a 5-minute interval between them and allow it to dry for 15 minutes. If there is any doubt about the compatibility of release agent and rubber, a small test should be carried out first.

Mixing Ratios

The mixing ratio is 1A:1B by volume (Equal amounts of component A and component B by volume). Incorrect ratios can lead to faster or slower cure times of the rubber and may result in reduced mechanical properties. Do not attempt to add extra catalyst (component B) to speed up curing. Note: Once the resin has cured, it can be heated to 65ºC for 4–6 hours to increase its physical properties and performance.

Mixing Instructions

Liquid urethanes absorb atmospheric moisture. For best results, it is recommended that the ambient temperature be at least 23°C and the relative humidity below 50% RH. You must mix each component A & B separately in its own container thoroughly before mixing them together! Measure only as much resin as you are going to use. Pour the 2 components into a clean container and, using a mixing spatula, start mixing the two components together slowly but thoroughly so that they are very well blended, taking care to scrape the bottom and sides of the container well with the spatula. Remember that Smooth-Cast™ 45D has a short curing time, so you must not delay too long between mixing and casting.

Casting Instructions

During casting and curing, fumes (visible or invisible) may be generated, so there must be adequate ventilation in the workspace! For best results, start pouring the resin at the lowest point of the mold and allow it to rise slowly by itself until the mold is completely filled. A uniform flow while pouring the resin will minimize air bubble entrapment.

Working Time / Curing Time

The working time is approximately 5 minutes and the drying (curing) time varies depending on the mass of the object and the design of the mold. Larger mass castings may be warm when they cure; allow them to return to room temperature for easier demolding. Smaller mass or thin-walled pieces require more curing time than some parts with large mass. For best results, it is recommended that the ambient temperature be at least 23°C and the relative humidity below 50% RH.

Working time: 5 minutes
Cure time: 30 minutes

Performance

Finished pieces made from Smooth-Cast™ 45D are semi-flexible and durable. They withstand moisture, moderate heat, solvents and dilute acids and can be machined, primed/painted or bonded to other surfaces (any release agent must be thoroughly removed). If you are machining/working Smooth-Cast™ 45D, wear a dust mask or other device to avoid inhalation of residual particles. Pieces that will be painted can also be used outdoors; if left unpainted they will yellow more quickly when exposed to UV light.

Transport and Storage

Store and use the resin at room temperature (23°C); lower or higher temperatures will drastically reduce the working time and curing time. Storing the resin at lower or higher temperatures will reduce its shelf life, whether the container is opened or unopened. These resins have a limited shelf life and should be used as soon as possible. Closing the lids immediately after removing the required amount will extend the life of the remaining material. The remaining material should be used as soon as possible. Take particular care to keep the containers tightly closed.
