Essdee Fabric Block Printing Inks are water-based printmaking inks specially formulated for block printing on fabric. Their high viscosity (thick consistency) allows the ink to be applied evenly to the raised areas of the printing block, producing bold, clean and vibrant prints with a soft feel.
They are suitable for printing blocks made from linoleum, wood and other flexible carving materials. For optimum ink pick-up and even transfer onto the printing block, the specially designed Essdee Fabric Ink Rollers (SKU. 5611045) are recommended.
- Water-based, with no solvents required.
- High viscosity (thick consistency), specially formulated for block printing on fabric
- Produce bold and clean prints that remain soft to the touch.
- The colours can be intermixed to create additional shades and tones.
- For best results, 100% cotton fabric is recommended. They can also be used on finely woven fabrics such as linen and viscose, after testing first.
- Once heat-set, printed fabrics are washable up to 40°C.
- Tools and rollers can be easily cleaned with soap and water while the ink is still wet.
- Made in the United Kingdom.
Directions:
- Carve your design into the printing block (e.g. linoleum or wood) and use a roller to apply a thin, even layer of ink to the raised areas. Place the inked block face down onto the fabric and apply even pressure to transfer the design. When printing onto T-shirts and bags, place a piece of cardboard between the layers to prevent the ink from transferring through to the reverse side.
- Allow the print to dry completely. Drying time depends on the amount of ink applied, the type of fabric, temperature and humidity. For multi-colour prints, it is recommended to allow the previous layer to dry for approximately 2 hours before printing the next colour.
- Heat setting: Once the print is completely dry, iron the reverse side of the fabric for 4 minutes without steam, continuously moving the iron over the entire printed area. Once heat-set, the print becomes permanent and the fabric can be washed at temperatures up to 40°C. To help prolong the life of the print, washing and ironing the fabric inside out is recommended.
Note: The texture and density of the fabric weave can affect print definition. Smooth, tightly woven cotton fabrics generally produce cleaner results than heavily textured fabrics. Frequent washing may gradually cause the print to fade.
