Important Information
  • Colophony (Rosin) is a light-coloured natural pine resin supplied in irregular, translucent and brittle pieces. It is the solid resinous residue remaining after the distillation of volatile oils from the natural oleoresin of various pine species (Pinus).
  • It is a traditional raw material used in painting, varnish making, encaustic painting, printmaking, art conservation and jewellery making. It is also used as an ingredient in wax mixtures, where it helps increase the hardness and consistency of the mixture.
  • In lost-wax casting, it can be used as an ingredient in traditional modelling wax recipes, combined with materials such as beeswax and paraffin wax. The exact proportions depend on the desired hardness, flexibility and working properties of the finished mixture.
  • Colophony is also used as a natural resin for preparing traditional varnishes and binding media. It is soluble in alcohol, acetic acid, essential oils and fatty oils and can be combined with oils or waxes depending on the application.
  • Typical applications: traditional varnishes and binding media, wax mixtures, encaustic painting, printmaking, art conservation and the preparation of modelling waxes for lost-wax casting.
  • Storage: Keep tightly closed in a dry, well-ventilated place, protected from heat and direct sunlight. When stored under dry conditions at room temperature and protected from light, the manufacturer specifies a shelf life of approximately 3 years.
  • Caution: May cause an allergic skin reaction. Appropriate ventilation is recommended during processing, particularly when heating, and direct skin contact should be avoided.

Example Wax Recipe for Lost-Wax Casting

Colophony can be combined with beeswax and paraffin wax to prepare a traditional modelling wax for lost-wax casting. An example composition by weight is:

  • 70% beeswax
  • 20% paraffin wax
  • 10% colophony

For example, to prepare 500gr of wax mixture, use 350gr beeswax, 100gr paraffin wax and 50gr colophony.

Preparation:

  1. Break the colophony into smaller pieces so that it melts more easily and evenly.
  2. Melt the beeswax using gentle, controlled heat.
  3. Gradually add the colophony and stir until completely melted and a homogeneous mixture is obtained.
  4. Add the paraffin wax and continue stirring gently until fully incorporated.
  5. Remove the mixture from the heat and carefully pour it into a suitable mould or container. Allow it to cool and solidify completely before use.

The proportions can be adjusted according to the desired properties of the wax. Colophony increases the hardness and consistency of the mixture, while beeswax provides plasticity and paraffin wax affects hardness, flow and melting behaviour. For demanding casting applications, preparing a small test batch first is recommended.

Important: The above formulation is an example of a traditional wax recipe. The mixture should be prepared using controlled indirect heat in a well-ventilated area and away from open flames. Do not overheat the materials.
