Product Description

PL20 is a high-quality platinum-based (addition-cured) two-component silicone suitable for demanding mold-making applications. It is a more advanced type of RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanising) silicone compared to condensation cure silicones. The presence of platinum serves as a catalyst. It can be pigmented with silicone dyes. PL20 offers many advantages, including:

  • Reproduces fine details with accuracy.
  • Has very low shrinkage (≤0.1).
  • Has high elasticity and tear resistance.
  • Easy mixing ratio (1:1 by weight).
  • Excellent resistance to polyurethane resins.
  • Easy to use.

Recommended Uses

PL20 silicone is used for creating molds that require precision, with complex parts and accurate reproduction of the original dimensions. Finished silicone molds can be used for repeated casting of polyurethane resins, epoxy resins, plaster, cement, ceramic mixtures, chocolate (Food Safe with SGS certificate), etc.

Instructions for Use

PL20 SILICONE IS A PRODUCT INTENDED ONLY FOR PROFESSIONALS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE.

KEEP SILICONE AWAY FROM CHILDREN

Safety – Use silicone in a well-ventilated area. Wear safety glasses, long sleeves, gloves (not latex!), and a mask.
ONLY USE VINYL OR NITRILE GLOVES! LATEX GLOVES WILL PREVENT SILICONE FROM CURING!

Store and use silicone at room temperature (23°C). Higher temperatures will drastically reduce pot life and curing time. Storage at higher temperatures will also reduce shelf life, whether opened or sealed. These silicones have limited shelf life and should be used as soon as possible.

Cure Inhibition

Addition-cure silicones may fail to cure or may cure very slowly when in contact with certain substances or materials. This may result in a sticky, incompletely cured surface. Some of these materials include: latex, condensation cure silicones (tin-based), clays or sulfur-containing putties, certain wood surfaces, uncured polyester, epoxy- or urethane-based silicones. These may delay or prevent curing. If compatibility is uncertain, a small-scale test is recommended. Apply a small amount of silicone—if it remains sticky after the specified curing time, the material is incompatible.

Application of Release Agent

If silicone is used as a mold: Initially, PL20 molds naturally have some release properties. Depending on the casting material, release ability may wear off over time and parts may stick. Applying a liquid mold release agent with a brush, such as Mold Release Agent code 1900090 before casting polyurethane, polyester, or epoxy resins helps protect the mold long-term and facilitates demolding (allow 30 minutes drying before casting). No release agent is required for wax or plaster casting.

If silicone is used as a casting material in a mold: Release agent is usually unnecessary, but it may help with easier demolding. Apply a thin coat and allow 30 minutes to dry. Test for compatibility if unsure.

Mixing Ratios

Mixing ratio is 1A:1B by weight (equal amounts of A and B). Incorrect ratios may result in faster or slower curing and reduced mechanical properties. Do not add extra catalyst to accelerate curing; addition-cure silicones do not work this way.

Mixing Instructions

Accurately weigh and mix only the amount you will use. Pour both components into a clean container and stir with a wooden spatula for 1–2 minutes until thoroughly blended, scraping sides and bottom.

Casting Instructions

For best results, pour silicone at the lowest point of the mold and let it rise naturally to cover the original. Even flow minimizes air bubbles. Silicone should cover the original at least 1 cm above its highest point.

Pot Life / Curing Time

Pot life and curing time vary with ambient temperature. PL20 can be used at 15–30°C. Optimal performance is achieved at ≥20°C.

Pot life: 2–5 minutes
Curing time: 2–3 hours

Transport and Storage

Store silicone in tightly sealed containers during transport and storage at 23°C in a shaded area. Shelf life is 12 months if stored correctly. Higher temperatures reduce shelf life. Use as soon as possible for optimal performance.
