Product Description
Ecoflex™ 00-50 is a high-quality platinum-based (addition cured) two-component silicone suitable for demanding mold-making applications as well as for creating very flexible objects. It is certified Skin Safe by an independent laboratory. It is a more advanced type of RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanising) silicone compared to condensation-cure silicones. Platinum acts as a catalyst. It can be pigmented with silicone pigments. Ecoflex™ 00-50 has many advantages, including:
- It reproduces fine details accurately.
- It has minimal shrinkage (<0.02mm / mm).
- It offers high elasticity and tear strength.
- Easy mixing ratio (1:1 by volume, no scale needed).
- It is extremely resistant to polyurethane resins.
- It withstands temperatures up to 232°C, making it suitable for casting low-melting metals.
- It is easy to use.
Suggested Uses
Ecoflex™ 00-50 is used for the creation of molds requiring accuracy, with intricate parts where dimensional precision of the original is important. Finished silicone molds can be used for repeated casting of polyurethane resins, epoxy resins, plasters, cement, ceramic mixes, and it is certified Skin Safe by an independent laboratory.
Instructions for Use
Ecoflex™ 00-50 IS A PRODUCT INTENDED FOR PROFESSIONAL USE ONLY, SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ AND UNDERSTAND THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USE.
KEEP THE SILICONE AWAY FROM CHILDREN
Safety – Use the silicone in a well-ventilated area (with exhaust/ventilation). Wear safety glasses, long sleeves, gloves (not latex!) and a mask.
ONLY WEAR VINYL OR NITRILE GLOVES! LATEX GLOVES WILL PREVENT THE SILICONE FROM CURING!
Store and use the silicone at room temperature (23°C). Higher temperatures will drastically reduce pot life and cure time. Storing silicone at elevated temperatures will reduce its shelf life, whether the container is opened or closed. These silicones have a limited shelf life and should be used as soon as possible.
Inhibition
Addition-cure silicones may fail to cure or may cure very slowly when they come into contact with certain substances or materials. This will result in them remaining tacky and never fully curing. Some of these materials include: latex, condensation-cure silicones (tin-based silicones), clays or plastilines that contain sulfur, certain wood surfaces, uncured polyester, epoxy- or urethane-based silicones, all of which may delay or prevent curing. If there is any doubt about the compatibility of a material with the silicone, a small-scale test is recommended. Apply a small amount of silicone and if it remains tacky and has not cured after the specified cure time, then that material is inhibiting the silicone.
Applying Release Agent
• When using the silicone as a mold: When first cast, a mold made from Ecoflex™ 00-50 exhibits natural release characteristics. Depending on what is being cast into the mold, its inherent release properties may diminish over time and parts may begin to stick. Applying a release agent such as Universal Mold Release Spray code 9418006 before casting polyurethane, polyester or epoxy resins helps prevent mold degradation over time and allows easier release of the parts (let the release agent dry for 30 minutes before casting). No release agent is required when casting wax or plaster.
• When using the silicone as a casting material inside a mold: Although the use of a release agent is often not necessary in this case, it can make demolding easier. Apply a thin layer of Creartec Silicone Mould Release Cream code 1900091 or Mann Easy Release 200 code 9418007 to the mold and allow it to dry for 30 minutes. If there is any doubt about compatibility between the release agent and the silicone, perform a small test first.
Mixing Ratio
The mixing ratio is 1A:1B by volume (equal amounts of Parts A and B). Incorrect ratios can lead to faster or slower cure times and may reduce mechanical properties. Do not attempt to add extra catalyst (Part B) to accelerate curing; addition-cure silicones do not work this way.
Mixing Instructions
Mix only the amount of silicone you intend to use. Pour the two parts of silicone into a clean container and, using a wooden mixing spatula, begin stirring both components together for about 1–2 minutes until they are thoroughly blended, taking care to scrape the bottom and sides of the container.
Casting Instructions
For best results, begin pouring the silicone at the lowest point of the mold and let it rise slowly by itself until the original is completely covered. A steady, even pour will minimize the entrapment of air bubbles. The silicone should cover the original at least 1cm above its highest point.
Working Time / Cure Time
Working time and curing time vary significantly depending on ambient temperature. Ecoflex™ 00-50 can be used at ambient temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. For best results, ambient temperature should be at least 20°C.
Working time: 45 minutes
Cure time: 4 hours
Transport and Storage
The silicone should be stored in tightly closed containers during transport and storage. It should be stored at room temperature (23°C) in a shaded area. When stored correctly, the silicone has a shelf life of 12 months. Storing the silicone at higher temperatures will reduce its shelf life, whether the container is opened or closed. These silicones have a limited shelf life and should be used as soon as possible. Although it may still be possible to use the silicone after a longer period, its performance may be reduced. Take special care to ensure containers are kept tightly sealed.
